Indoor running

I had big plans today for running 14 miles outside. I psyched myself up for a long mid-week run. I was ready. Then, I watched the news and saw that not only do we have "arctic winds," but we have a temperature advisory. I don't even know what a temperature advisory is. Apparently, for the rest of the week, we will have single digit temps and a real feel of well below 0. Yikes. As much as I don't want to run long runs on the treadmill, I also have no desire to get hypothermia (which I can get even in mild temperatures after a long run) or frostbite just to get miles in. It looks like today's run and even my long run on Saturday will be on the treadmill. We are supposed to get hit hard with a snow storm on Friday night and Saturday during the day.

If Bungee's recent energy levels are any indication, she's definitely going to suffer this week. I took her into New Haven for a meeting yesterday and there was another dog in the office. They went NUTS playing together. I am happy Bungee got some good socialization time, but she also looked completely insane running around the office space.

Sort of like this, without the car.

Yesterday, we got a little bit of snow. The roads were a little rough for speed work, so it looks like I will only have one outdoor run this week. My training called for a 10k at 10k pace and since I had no idea what that pace should be, I checked out Galloway's Magic Mile predictor. I'm not sure I like Jeff Galloway anymore since that meant I had to run 10k at 7:41 min/mile. I cheated a little bit and warmed up for a quarter mile at a 10 min mile pace, but then counted it towards the 10k. My legs were not feeling speedy, but I got it done.

After all of this training, Alyssa and I are seriously contemplating some payback for her friend who designed the program. I'm not sure what we'll do yet, but the punishment needs to fit the crime. Then again, if we PR like crazy, maybe we'll restrain ourselves from too much retribution.

What's the worst weather you've run in? Last winter I ran in 7 degree temps, but there was no wind and sun.

  2. So what happens if said storm takes out your power (since we know that is a theme for you) and then the treadmill wont work? What then!!!! :D (I really hope you don't loose power again, seriously you've had enough of that to last 3 lifetimes)

  3. Today I went out with the temp at 13 and wind chill in the single digits. I'm not going to lie--it kind of sucked! But I kept repeating to myself that it beat the treadmill (I loathe it). I don't blame anyone for choosing it with your forecast though!

One nice thing about having a 14-yr. old dog: he needs very little exercise these days, so if it's cold like today, a short walk does the trick!

  4. Ugh I know. Yesterday we were sub zero with wind chills in the -20 range. I draw the line at zero. I'm not ashamed to say I milled it.
